(HIE) Historical Important Events of Jammu and Kashmir between the period of 1846 AD and 1949 AD
- After "Treaty Of Amritsar" which was signed between the British Government and Gulab Singh Dogra on 15th March, 1846. Gulab Singh Dogra became the Maharaja of independent state of Jammu and Kashmir.
- 1846 AD - 1856 AD :- That was reigning period of Maharaja GULAB SINGH DOGRA in Jammu and Kashmir State.
- During the 10 years ruling period of Gulab Singh, he established the state of Jammu and Kashmir and demarcated it's boundaries. He drove Khakhas and Bombas out of the valley and installed strong Garrisons in the forts guarding the passes. He reorganised the revenue and Police administration. He undertook to reform the " Begar System". He was the founder of new town at Purmandal.
- 1856 AD to 1885 AD :- That was reigning period of Maharaja RANBIR SINGH in the state of Jammu and Kashmir.
- During the 29 years reigning period of Ranbir Singh , he affected reforms in administration of the state. He set up three main departments : The revenue , the civil and the military. The judicial system was reorganised. Appeal courts were set up both at Jammu and Srinagar. 30 subordinates courts functioned in the state. A cart road was constructed between Rawalpindi and Srinagar. Another road was built between jammu and valley. Telegraph and postal service was instituted. Silk worm seeds we're imported from China to improve silk making. He donated one lakh rupees to set up Punjab University at Lahore and became it's first fellow. He set up Maktabs and Pathshalas in the state. He constructed a splendid monument Raghunath temple complex at Jammu.
- 1878-79 AD , a great famine struck the valley in which thousands of people died and crops lay down everywhere.
- 1885 AD to 1925 AD : That was reigning period of Maharaja PRATAP SINGH in the state of Jammu and Kashmir.
